Limestone from the Ozark Southern Stone quarry can be seen on many historic buildings in the Northwest Arkansas region. Local to Eureka Springs, the Crescent Hotel, Basin Park Hotel, Flatiron Building and Downtown Bank of Eureka Springs are among a few of the structures featuring Ozark Southern Stone limestone.
The outcropping rocks throughout most of eastern and central Kansas are all sedimentary strata of Late Paleozoic age. They include shale, sandstone, limestone, and conglomerate having widely varied characteristics, as well as coal beds, dolomite, and some, other rock types. Paleozoic rocks underlie all of western Kansas.
The Fencepost limestone is a relatively thin, resistant, and recognizable bed of stone that forms the middle range of bluffs in the Smoky Hills region of north-central Kansas, ranging from the Nebraska border near Mahaska, Kansas, about 200 miles southwest to within a few miles of Dodge City, Kansas, where it is seen in the buildings of the farms and cities of the area.
Many of the limestone units in the Kansas City and Marmaton groups in eastern Kansas outcrops are believed to have marine-bank facies, also, but they have not been studied or described. The Lansing Group is recognized in the subsurface, but usually it is not separated from the Kansas City Group.
